Parkway treasurer placed on paid administrative leave

By Erin Gardner
ROCKFORD - Parkway school board members voted not to renew the district treasurer's contract and placed her on paid administrative leave Monday.
The decision came after the board met in executive session during a special meeting to discuss the treasurer's employment.
"At its meeting … the Parkway Local School District Board of Education voted not to renew treasurer Debbie Pierce's contract upon its expiration on July 31, and to place Miss Pierce on paid administrative leave, effective Feb. 1," superintendent Laura Young said in a prepared statement.
Board members subsequently appointed Kurt Wendell as interim treasurer, and Sherry Schaefer as interim assistant treasurer, effective Feb. 1, per Young's statement.
"The board's decision reflects its responsibility to act in the best interest of the district. The board appreciates Miss Pierce's service and thanks her for her contributions," the statement concludes.
No reason was cited for the decision. When asked for further information or if there was any misuse of funds, Young declined to comment.
