William Berger
William "Bill" Alfred Berger, age 89, formerly of St. Rt. 705, Osgood, passed away peacefully of natural causes Saturday morning, March 7, 2026, at The Gardens of St. Henry in St. Henry, Ohio.
He was born December 21, 1936, in North Star, Ohio, to the late Edmond & Mary (Christian) Berger. On October 29, 1960, at St. Rose Catholic Church in Maria Stein, Bill married Janice (Hemmelgarn) Berger who preceded him in death on March 3, 2010.
Surviving are four children: Karen & John Hilgefort of Versailles, Roger & Amy Berger of Plain City, Rodney Berger of Botkins, Michelle & Anton and Kuether of Covington; daughter-in-law, Angie & Ted Weaver of Sidney; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; three siblings: Patricia Knapke of Versailles, Elizabeth Hassenhaur & Robert Lake of Greenville and Madonna & Terry Winner of Greenville; sisters and brothers-in-law: Treva Berger of Osgood, Shirley Berger of North Star and Marjorie & Ralph Diller of Maria Stein along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Gerald Berger, an infant daughter, Kathleen Berger and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Berger; three siblings: Marjorie & Gene Speelman, Joseph Berger and Robert Berger; brothers & sisters-in-law: Paul Knapke, Elmer & Regina Hemmelgarn, Wilma Richert, Alton Hemmelgarn and Viola & Richard Miller.
Mr. Berger was a 1954 graduate of Versailles High School. He completed US Army active-duty training in 1959 and served in the Army National Guard until 1964. Bill retired in 1999 from the Minster Machine Company where he had been employed as an assembler and inspector for 32 years. He previously worked 11 years for Sidney Aluminum.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, St. Nicholas Men's Sodality, St. Denis Knights of Columbus Council #1756 and a Board member of Osgood Area Rescue. Bill was dedicated to his family. Over the years, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, traveling, and attending swap meets & flea markets with Janice. Bill was also good at tinkering and was talented at restoring vintage farm equipment, especially tuning the tractors to run well.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, March 13, 2026, at St. Nicholas Church in Osgood with Rev. Andrew Reckers presiding. Interment will follow at St. Martin Cemetery.
Family and friends may call Thursday, 2:00 to 7:00 PM and Friday 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie.
