James Scheer
James H. Scheer, age 98, of New Bremen, passed away on March 11, 2026, at Elmwood Assisted Living in New Bremen.
He was born on October 11, 1927, in Lock Two, Ohio, to the late Lafe and Wilma (Oberwitte) Scheer. On November 29, 1947 in McCartyville, Ohio, he married Lucille Platfoot. They were married for 74 years before she preceded him in death on June 3, 2022.
Surviving are his three children, Jim (Karen) Scheer, Celina, Bruce Scheer, Greenville, Teresa Harris, Longmont, CO and one daughter-in-law Dot Scheer, New Bremen. Also left to cherish his memory are his seven grandchildren: Becky (Steve) Pape, Tod (Dawn) Scheer, Gregg (Brittany) Scheer, Tammy Scheer, Kelly (Chris Enright) Scheer, Amy (Rich) Collins, and Lindsay (Mike) Gast; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and his sister-in-law Alice Platfoot of Sidney.
Preceding him in death were two sons: Ron Scheer and Brad Scheer; a son-in-law Ken Harris and two daughters-in-law Donna Scheer and Robin Scheer; his sister Lela Mae Billger and his six brothers Ralph Scheer, Roger (Bud) Scheer, Sylvester (Bill) Scheer, Robert Scheer, Delbert (Butch) Scheer and Lafe Jr. (Jack) Scheer; and in-laws Agnes Cloppert, Irene Heeter, Rosella (Sally) Ware, Esther Scheer, Jeanie Billing, Mary Platfoot, Isabelle Platfoot, Herbert Platfoot, Robert Platfoot, Raymond Platfoot, Norman Platfoot, Norbert Platfoot and Orville (Orie) Platfoot.
Jim and five of his brothers served in WWIl at the same time. He was stationed on Guam with the Army Air Corps (later known as the Air Force). When he knew he was soon to be entering the military, he and several friends at age 17 took a motorcycle trip on their Harleys to Pike's Peak. He always liked adventure. He owned motorcycles, boats, and a 1/4 share in a Piper Cub airplane (paying $200 for his share).
Jim retired from Goodyear in 1987 after 34 years of service. Throughout his life, Jim and Lucille worked together on many projects. Early in their marriage they owned a bar. Later they devoted many hours of their time to various charitable organizations, in particular the Elks. After retirement Jim and Lucille established Scheer Real Estate, and they later drove for Classic Carriers of Midmark, making deliveries all over the country with Lucille at Jim's side serving as his navigator with the AAA TripTik as her guide.
Jim was very active in many organizations and sought to help people whenever he could. He was a member of the Eagles, Moose, AmVets, Shriners and was state president of the Elks from 1990 - 1991. A longtime member of the New Bremen American Legion Post 241, he was the last surviving WWIl veteran of Post 241.
He was known for his out-going personality and his quick wit. He had a whole collection of jokes and stories that he could pull out of his hat at just the right moment. He loved life and tried to raise the spirits of everyone around him, and usually succeeded in doing that.
Jim was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen.
In keeping with Jim's wishes, no services will be held.
If one wishes, memorial contributions in memory of Jim can be made to support Wilson Home Health and Hospice (1081 Fairington Drive, Sidney, OH 45365) or another local hospice organization.
Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen is assisting the family, and online condolences can be left on the funeral home website at www.gilberghartwigfh.com.
