Grand Lake Fishing Report

Consistent weather makes for better fishing

By Matt Tuttle
Good day everyone.
Has anyone noticed besides me that the wind has blown 20 plus miles per hour every day?
Maybe this affects me more because of my profession. I was out fishing this past Sunday and was having difficulty keeping my hat on. However, I will take this over ice and snow.
It was great seeing people putting their boats in the water for the year and seeing people out taking pontoon rides. Our lake is beautiful to take in. It provides entertainment for some, rest for some and dinner for some, whether you take in one of the many restaurants located around the lake or you catch enough fish for dinner.
Speaking of fishing, let's talk about the bite being good one day and the next day they disappear. This can be the frustrating part of fishing our lake and especially if you don't have a lot time or aren't able to pick the days you get to go.
While looking at the weather forecast and you see several days in a row that are consistently warm, then you're in for a treat. Crappies will and are moving shallow. I caught some crappies in stale beds that were in two feet of water and I was set at 12-13 inches with my 5/8-inch 3D printed cork. So if you have limited time make sure to keep the shallows honest. I typically use B&M Crappie baits two-inch triple tail purple and chartreuse on a 1/32 ounce jig head, however if you are not getting bit, I will change the kind of jig like to a hand tied jig made by Mike Campbell. It's a different profile and is more compact as another option for you to get a bite. I was fishing those stake beds with my Outlaw Crappie poles 10-foot Pro SE with a Pflueger Trion 25 series reel with six-pound Slimeline.
So check out those stake beds and good luck! All of the tackle and rods can be found at Eastside Bait and Tackle in St. Marys.
