NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING FOR PROPOSED MAJOR UTILITY FACILITY
AES Ohio invites Mercer County residents and other interested members of the public to attend an informational open house for its proposed Mt. Zion to Marathon - Transmission Interconnection Project. AES Ohio is proposing to construct a new 69 kilovolt (kV) transmission line from the Marathon Substation to the Wabash Valley Power Authority (WVPA) Point of Interconnection (POI) on the Ohio/Indiana border. The improvement project involves building approximately 2.4 miles of new transmission line in Ohio.
The public informational open house will be held from 5:00 to 7:30 P.M., Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at Fort Recovery High School, 400 E Butler Street, Fort Recovery, OH 45846. The informational open house provides the public an opportunity to meet and talk with project representatives and view detailed project maps. There is no formal presentation. Visitors may come and go at any time.
AES Ohio is committed to safe, reliable service for new and existing customers, and upgrades are necessary to strengthen the electric transmission system. Currently, the Macedon and Marathon substations are served by a radial 69kV circuit. WVPA has a new load on their system they would like to serve with a non-radial line. The existing radial line is exposed to a permanent outage resulting from a single contingency. Additionally, best utility practice is to serve via a looped feed, have multiple voltages available in near proximity to ensure redundancy capacity, and improve reliability.
The new line from the Marathon substation to a connection point with WVPA along the Ohio/Indiana border will provide a looped feed with a strong new source into the area.
AES Ohio has extensively studied the general area between the substations to identify multiple route options for the transmission line to minimize any impacts to sensitive areas and land uses. Based on the study's preliminary results, AES Ohio has identified the transmission line routes that are shown on the map below.
These routes under consideration largely follow road right-of-way, property lines, and AES Ohio's existing transmission line right-of-way. It is anticipated that the new line will be installed on steel and ductile iron poles on foundation, with heights ranging from approximately 70 to 90 feet.
Public comments will be accepted and considered by AES Ohio staff as part of the process of further evaluating the proposed routes. Interested parties may also send written comments or questions to: Stantec, ATTN: AES Marathon Project Team, 1500 Lake Shore Drive, Suite 100, Columbus, Ohio 43204-3800, or email AESMarathon@stantec.com, or request information or comment by leaving a message at 713-332-2833.
