The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

The lake bed of the Wickiup Reservoir is exposed by drought conditions that left the reservoir at 1% capacity on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, near La Pine, Ore. The stark contrast between the water haves and have-nots two hours southeast of Portland has brought new urgency to efforts to share the resource. Proposals to create "water banks" or "water markets" would allow farmers with excess water to "lease" it to those in need. (AP Photo/Nathan Howard)
