The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

Ethnic Chinese people throw imitation money known as 'hell money' to be burned as offerings, during the Hungry Ghost Festival in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023. The festival is celebrated during the seventh month of the Chinese lunar calendar, when prayers are offered to the dead and offerings of food and paper-made models of items such as televisions and cars are burned to appease wandering spirits as it is believed that the gates of hell are opened during the month and the souls of dead ancestors return to visit their relatives.
