The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

The undated photo provided by University of Stuttgart shows an ancient Buddhist statue that a Nazi expedition brought back from Tibet shortly before World War II. The statue was carved from a meteorite which crashed on Earth thousands of years ago. Elmar Buchner of the University of Stuttgart told The Associated Press that the existence of the statue known as "iron man" was only revealed in 2007 when its owner died and it came up for auction.
