The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

This image shows a frame from a 15-second ultra-high-definition video featuring a cat named Taters which was streamed via laser from deep space by NASA on Dec. 11, 2023. It was part of the technology demonstration known as Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC), which is attached to the Psyche spacecraft traveling to the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The video was loaded into Psyche's laser experiment long before the spacecraft blasted off to a metal-rich asteroid in October. (NASA via AP)
