The Daily Standard has published our selection of 'World Pictures' for almost ten years. It started as a result of seeing so many pictures on the Associated Press wire service that illustrate breaking news, current events, natural wonders, foreign cultures and the human condition. But most of these images could never have fit in our print edition. As of a week ago, The Daily Standard switched to a tier of service from the AP more appropriate for a newspaper of our size. Unfortunately this tier does not have carte blanche access to AP pictures, and we will be retiring our 'World Pictures' feature. Thank you for learning about our world with us through 'World Picts'.

A masked Bulgarian participates in a performance of an ancient Surva ritual in the village of Donna Sekirna, Bulgaria, south of the capital Sofia, late Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024. The authentic pagan festival, called Surva, is held every year on the 13th and 14th of January in the western part of Bulgaria to mark the New Year. Surva is performed by costumed men, some in sheepskin or other colorful garments, bells, and masks, who walk around and dance to scare away the evil spirits in the hopes of providing a good harvest, health, fertility, and happiness.
