Roger Powell
Mercer County native Roger Lee Powell, 81, of Union City, died at 1:30 a.m. Aug. 5, 2006, at the Brethren Retirement Community, Greenville.
He was born May 28, 1925, in Mercer County, to Benjamin and Luetta Curless Powell. He married Martha Ann Adams, who is deceased.
Survivors are two sons, Mark (Judy), Greenville, and John, Union City; three daughters, Marie Nunez, Covington, Julia Oswalt, Greenville, and Amy (Dan) Gehret, North Star; three brothers, Jerry, Coldwater, Jack, Rockford, and Bill, Portland, Ind.; two sisters, Hope Stein and Joan Jutte, both of Celina; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Deceased are two sons, Robert and Gary; two brothers, Richard and Robert; two sisters, Mary Jane Wurster and Violet Shirk; half brother, Wright; and two half sisters, Delilah Beams and Mabel Ellis.
He was as dairy farmer and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. He was a 1943 graduate of Celina High School. He was a member of Community United Methodist Church, Union City; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5713, Celina; Brown Swiss Breeder's Association; and former 4-H advisor and supporter of Darke County Junior Fair.
Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville, the Rev. Todd Reish officiating. Burial is at Swamp College Cemetery, Celina. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Celina VFW.
Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
