WSU-LC adding volleyball to sports program

The Wright State University-Lake Campus is adding another sport to its athletic program as volleyball makes its return.

With the addition of volleyball, WSU-LC now has three varsity sports, along with men's basketball and women's basketball. Volleyball used to be a sport at the Lake Campus in the 1980s, but the program was cut due to funding.

"We're really excited to be able to again offer this program, which will allow women who attend the Lake Campus the opportunity to continue to play a very popular sport," said Lake Campus Athletic Director Steve Moor.

Moor, an athletic director at St. Marys for 16 years prior to working at the Lake Campus, knows that volleyball around the Grand Lake area is as good as it gets.

"The talent for volleyball is evident when you look around the area here," said Moor. "All the great volleyball players on all the great teams need another place to play collegiate volleyball and I wanted to bring that back to the Lake Campus."

When volleyball used to be at the Lake Campus, the Lakers were Ohio Regional Campus Tournament champions in 1984, 1985 and 1987.

Any interested students are welcome to participate, provided they meet the eligibility requirements as stated in the Lake Campus Athletic Department Guidelines, which can be accessed via the Lake Campus Web site at www.wright.edu/lake/athletics/athletic_guides.html.

The volleyball season will begin in September and last through October 21, with the schedule still being finalized.

Moor said that the schedule is still a work in progress as they look for a head coach to lead the volleyball program.

"We need a coach that's willling to start from scratch with the program," pointed out Moor. "Looking for someone with a volleyball background that will be willing to help me develop a schedule. We would like to have a competitive schedule like we have for the two basketball teams."
