Old look with new parts

White oak gates, built at Hoge Lumber Company in New Knoxville, were installed Tuesday morning at Lock One on the Miami and Erie Canal in New Bremen. The replica, which took over a month to construct, is lowered into place under the watchful eyes of workers and spectators. The purpose of the project, funded in part by a $280,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Transportation and a $70,000 match from the New Bremen Historic Association, is to restore the canal area to its 1910 appearance. Landscaping remains to be done but officials hope everything will be complete by the end of summer.
