Drought impacts county corn; still hope for beans

Despite almost an inch of rain that came to the county overnight, it's going to take a lot more than that to pull crops out of drought-like conditions that have gripped the area, local weather and ag officials say.
Corn in Mercer County will no doubt suffer production losses due to the dryness some are likening to the drought of 1988. But there's still hope for soybeans. [More]
Cougars back for another IFL campaign

As is the case with any team, the Mercer County Cougars have seen familiar faces depart after last season, while others step into the blue and white jerseys this season for the first time.
The semipro football team based out of Fort Recovery enters their fourth year in the Interstate Football League coming off an 8-2 regular season, losing in the second round of the playoffs, 7-6, to eventual Interstate Bowl runner-up Classic City Crush. [More]

Lightning strikes interrupt electricity to parts of Grand Lake area
A thunderstorm that brought a dazzling lightning show to the Grand Lake area left many local residents without power overnight.
According to several area utility companies, including the city of Celina's electrical department, widespread and spotty power outages began shortly after midnight.

ROCKFORD - The village may get a new police cruiser much sooner than originally planned.
In June council members approved purchasing a 2008 Ford Crown Victoria police cruiser for $31,274 through Statewide Ford Lincoln Mercury, Van Wert. It would be available in September or October.

Officials opt not to replace outdated, failing boiler
New Bremen school officials this month decided against replacing an outdated and failing boiler, opting instead to repair the 1929 National Steel Boiler until they determine the future of the elementary/middle school building, Superintendent Ann Harvey told the newspaper Wednesday.
