Soil judging
Photo by Mark Pummell/The Daily Standard

More than 140 students from Coldwater, Fort Recovery, Parkway and St. Henry schools participated in the annual Mercer County Soil Judging Contest Friday at the Dan Dues farm on state Route 118 north of Philothea Road. Students judged soil for urban and rural uses, looking at the slope, texture, drainage and flooding properties of the soil. They also determined what management practices would need to be installed for urban and rural uses. Contest results will be available at the Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) office in Celina. The SWCD sponsors the contest each year.
