Lonnie Hensley
Lonnie Hensley, 84, 106 Wayne St., Rockford, died at 8:25 p.m. Jan. 30, 2010, at The Laurels of Shane Hill, Rockford.
He was born May 9, 1925, in Calvin, Ky., to Henry B. and Creasy Saylor Hensley. On Dec. 7, 1946, he married Evelyn Simpson, who died June 5, 2004.
Surviving are two sons, Darrell (Rebecca) Hensley, Sidney, and Gary (Pam) Hensley, Celina; two daughters, Diane (Gary) Thatcher, Pemberville, and Gay L. (Grieg) Brehm, Rockford; three sisters, Sophia Longsworth and Gladys (Willard) Caldwell, all of Tennessee, and Janice (Del) Short, of Kentucky; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are six brothers, Clarence, Pittman, Bratcher, Levi, Henry Jr. and George Hensley; seven sisters, Birdie Marsee, Lydia Hensley, Glessie Cowan, Edith Green, Louvernia Wilson, Flora Marsee and Mary Hensley.
He retired from the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant, St. Marys. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 4th Infantry Division in the European African Middle East Campaign. He earned a Purple Heart, three Combat Stars, an Expert Combat Infantry Metal and Badge and the World War II Bronze Star Medal. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, all of Celina, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Rockford.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Lehman-Hogenkamp-Dzendzel Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Kim Miller officiating. Burial is at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, with military honors conducted by the VFW and American Legion.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The American Legion and VFW will lead services at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
