Lowell Welker
Lowell Albert Welker, 89, Mendon, died at 2:35 p.m. July 15, 2010, at his home.
He was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Elgin, to Eltie E. and Anna Jane Hughes Welker. On May 23, 1942, he married Eleanor Glee Orwick, who died April 24, 2007.
Surviving is a son, Eric (Bonita) Welker, Mendon; three daughters, Caral (William) Snider and June (Gordon) Gingrich, all of Mendon, and Jane Amstutz, Mount Pleasant, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Deceased are three brothers, Orren, Delmar and Richard Welker; a sister, Leona Reahm; and a grandson, Mark Snider.
He was a farmer and owned M&W Implement business in Mendon. He also taught math at York High School in Jonestown. He also worked as the health department sanitarian for Mercer and Allen counties and was the department of health commissioner for Allen County. He was a graduate of York High School and was a college graduate. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving as a pilot in the European Theater during World War II. He also served on the Mendon Village Council. He was a member of the Mendon United Methodist Church, where he was on the church council and was a Sunday school teacher.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday at the church, the Rev. Don Clinger officiating. Burial is at Goodwin Cemetery in Elgin.
Calling is 2-7 p.m. Sunday at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Mendon.
