Frederick Opperman
Frederick C. Opperman, 80, New Bremen, died at 2:30 a.m. Nov. 7, 2010, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
He was born May 27, 1930, near New Knoxville to Herman C. and Anna C. Nolte Opperman. On Oct. 10, 1953, he married Betty Jean Quellhorst, who died May 10, 2009.
Surviving are two sons, Larry (Frances) Opperman, Dunn, N.C., and Bill (Cathleen) Opperman, Pickerington; four siblings, the Rev. Robert (Jeanne) Opperman, Fostoria, Myron (Waverlene) Opperman, New Knoxville, Marjorie Meier, Prescott, Wisc., and Marvin Opperman, St. Marys; two in-laws, Mervin (Jeannette) Quellhorst, New Bremen, and the Rev. Ralph (Susan) Quellhorst, Delaware; and four grandchildren.
Also deceased are two brothers, Vernon and Edward Opperman; and a sister, Dorothy Jung.
He was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen. He was a member of the American Legion Post 241 and the Woodman of the World Camp 149, both of New Bremen. He was a member of the New Bremen/German Township Fire Department. He was a charter member of the Moonwalkers Sams 68 and the Traveling Wheels camping groups. He was a 1948 graduate of Memorial High School in St. Marys. He served as a sergeant in U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired in 1993 as assistant superintendent of plant operations at the former Milk Marketing Inc. of New Bremen.
Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Burial is at the German Protestant Cemetery in New Bremen.
Calling is 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the church memorial fund.
