Ruth Anderson
Ruth "Sue" Yarnnelle Fallang Anderson, 88, Centerville, died Jan. 3, 2011.
She was born in Celina to Dennis S. and Grace Y. Reed Springer. She married Orviel W. Fallang, who died in 1970. In 1972, she married Nels E. Anderson Sr., who died in 1987.
Surviving are three sons, Dennis (Linda) Fallang, Centerville, J.D., Centerville, and David (Lynn) Fallang, Middletown; two daughters, Michelle (Matt) Patterson, Ph.D., Snoqualmie, Wash., and Dr. Jennifer (Mike) Bell, Morehead City, N.C.; a sister, Estella (Don) Richards; nine grandchildren and several stepgrandchildren.
Also deceased is a sister, Helen Cato; and two brothers, Joe and Jim Springer.
She was a graduate of Celina High School. In April 1943, she became the first woman in Mercer County to enlist in the women's Naval division, the W.A.V.E.S. She served in the U.S. Navy during World War II to attain the rank of Radioman, second class. She met Madame Chiang Kai-shek and taught Morse code to the son of Gen. Charles deGaulle. She received a Bachelor's of Education from Miami University in 1950. She received her Master's in Education from The Ohio State University. She and her husband established the Far Hills Animal Hospital. She also taught at Rose E. Miller Elementary School until 1960. She was a member of The Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Oakwood. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and volunteered for the Dayton Horse Show.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial is at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Calling is noon -1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
