John H. Zumberge, 87, Celina, died at 9:54 a.m. Jan. 18, 2011, at The Gardens at Celina.

He was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Celina, to Charles and Caroline Stukenborg Zumberge. On June 11, 1949, he married, Virginia L. Kittle, who died Jan. 20, 2005.

Surviving are three sons, Charles Zumberge, Steve (Ginny) Zumberge and Michael (Cheryl) Zumberge, all of Celina; two daughters, Theresa Zumberge and Jennifer Zumberge, both of Celina; a son-in-law, Scott Nicodemus, Covington; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Also deceased are a daughter, Loree Nicodemus; two grandsons; two brothers, the Rev. August Zumberge and Ed Zumberge; and five sisters, Erma Winner, Annette Vanderhorst, Ann Knapke, Hilda Sommers and Margaret Dabbelt.

He worked as a farmer. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1940. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Celina. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had served in the Philippines. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5713 and the Knights of Columbus Council #1800, both of Celina. He was a Jefferson Township Trustee for 33 years and served on the board for Mercer Landmark and State Landmark. He served on the Board of the Mercer County Farm Bureau for many years and the State Board of the Ohio Farm Bureau for 15 years and was on the Farm Bureau Advisory Council.

Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial with graveside military rites conducted by the Celina American Legion Post and VFW Post will be at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery in Celina.

Calling is 1-7 p.m. Sunday and 9:30-10:15 a.m. Monday at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina.

Memorials may be made to the State of the Heart Hospice, Immaculate Conception Endowment Fund or donations toward Masses at the church.
