People evacuated, roads closed, emergency declarations issued

A deluge of rain and melting snow overnight caused flooding that chased some Mercer and Auglaize county families from their homes early this morning.
Water rescues - some by boat - were ongoing at different locations at press time today after nearly 3 inches of rain fell and swelled Grand Lake, area rivers and creeks. Emergency declarations were issued in Mercer County, as well as the village of Coldwater, to possibly help flood victims obtain funding for damage. [More]

Blacks early farmers in area
It wasn't the Miami & Erie Canal that brought the first black residents to this area as many believe. By the 1845 canal opening, several black settlers, owning thousands of acres of farmland in Mercer County, were prospering in west central Ohio.

West Ohio High School Bowling Conference girls co-champs Coldwater and St. Marys advanced to this week's state bowling tournament after finishing 1-2 at the district bowling tournament on Saturday at Interstate Lanes in Rossford.
