Clarence Gels
Clarence B. Gels, 102, North Lake, Ill., died April 26, 2011, in Illinois.
He was born Feb. 9, 1909, in St. Henry to Henry and Veronica Meyers Gels. On Aug. 23, 1932, he married Alma B. Seitz, who died June 29, 2005.
Surviving are four children, Donald (Lois) Gels, New Canaan, Conn., Barbara (Jerry) Thompson, Huntley, Ill., Cindy (Richard) Succa, Corona Del Mar, Calif., and Linda Gels, Evanston, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Carol Booth; two brothers, Leo and Ferdinand Gels; three sisters, Bernie, Anna, Clara; and a grandchild.
A 1926 graduate of St. Henry High School, he received a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in 1947, a CPA degree from the University of Illinois in 1948 and an AMP from Harvard Business School in 1960. He was general manager and director of grocery operations for Swift & Co. from 1927 to 1969. He served as regional postmaster general covering 13 Midwest states for the U.S. Postal Service from 1969 to 1976 and was owner of Midway Concrete Products Co. in Fond du Lac, Wis., from 1978 to 1983.
He was director of the National Canners Association, a member of the Illinois Society of CPAs, past president of the Fond du Lac Serra Club and a former member of St. Peters Holy Name Society.
A Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Henry Catholic Church, St. Henry, the Rev. Benedict Magabe officiating. Burial will follow in St. Henry cemetery.
Calling is 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, St. Henry.
