Great egret
Photo by Shelley Grieshop/The Daily Standard
A great egret stands in floodwater searching for food along Beaver Creek this week. The wading birds are cousins to the great blue heron, which are more commonly seen in the Grand Lake area. Some great blue herons are white and easily confused with the great egret, but the great egret has black legs and the white great blue heron has yellow legs. Officials with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources believe the egrets migrated to the area several years ago from the Great Lakes region.
