Cornelius Fenton
The Rev. Cornelius Fenton, C.PP.S., 89, died the morning of May 8, 2011, at St. Charles Center, Carthagena, where he made his home.
He was born Feb. 16, 1922, in Beach Grove, Ind., to Cornelius and Mary Elizabeth Hoerhammer Fenton. He entered the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in 1936 and was ordained on March 25, 1949.
Surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Deceased are three brothers and their spouses, Maurice and Marie Hufnagel, William and Mary Virginia Hufnagel and James and Barbara Fenton; a sister and her spouse, Clara and Robert Langston; and a sister, Mary Leathers.
Most of his 62 years as a priest were spent in parish ministry. His first assignments included parishes in Anderson, Ind., Blackstone, Va., Miami, Okla., Ottawa, Whiting, Ind., Montrose, Mo., Cincinnati, and Farmville, Va.
He was named pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Lexington, Ky., in 1968. He was pastor at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Celina, 1970-72. He also served in several parishes in Kentucky and Ohio, including at St. Peter Church in St. Peter in 1982, St. Joseph in St. Joe (Victoria) in 1984 and St.Aloysius, Carthagena, in 1986. He returned to St. Peter and St. Joe in 1989 and retired to St. Charles in 1993.
A Mass of Christian burial is 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Charles, the Rev. Anthony Fortman officiating and the Rev. James Seibert, homilist. Burial will follow in the community cemetery.
Calling is 1-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
