Leo Hoying
The Rev. Leo A. Hoying, 80, Carthagena, died May 22, 2011, at St. Charles Center.
He was born July 10, 1930, in St. Patrick, to William and Regina Bernard Hoying. He was ordained May 26, 1956, by Archbishop Karl J. Alter.
Surviving are brother, Alvin (Joan) Hoying, New Bremen; sisters, Catherine (James) Abele, Kettering, Veronica Presas, Fort Loramie, Margie Thieman, Kettering, Susan (Les) Prenger, Minster; sisters-in-law, Betty Hoying, Dayton, Patricia (Rolland) Griner, Fort Loramie, and Bonnie Hoying, West Carrollton.
Deceased are three brothers, Clarence "C.J.," Edward and Cyril "Cy" Hoying; a sister, Rosemary Saalman; brothers-in-law, Roman Saalman, Paul Perin and Art Presas.
He attended St. Patrick Grade School, St. Gregory Seminary, Mount St. Marys Seminary and Xavier University.
His first assignment in 1956 was associate pastor at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Norwood; he also served St. Saviour Rossmoyne, Cincinnati; St. Catherine, Cincinnati; Holy Rosary, St. Marys, from 1968-72; and at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Springfield. In 1977, he became pastor at Holy Rosary, St. Marys, and served until 1989. He oversaw the construction of the new church. He retired in 2001, having also served at St. Remy Catholic Church, Russia; St. Denis Catholic Church, Versailles; and Holy Family Catholic Church, Frenchtown.
Following retirement he served parishes surrounding Minster. He was a member of the St. Marys Rotary Club and the St. Marys Knights of Columbus.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Augustine Catholic church, Minster, Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and 9-10 a.m. Thursday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Minster.
