Verlin Hirschfeld
Verlin W. Hirschfeld, 93, of New Bremen, died at 10:20 p.m. Dec. 24, 2011, at the Convalarium at Indian Run, Dublin.
He was born Jan. 6, 1918, west of New Bremen, to Edward G. and Emma A. Oberwitte Hirschfeld. On July 5, 1942, he married Enola Luedeke, who survives in Dublin.
Also surviving are three children, Gary (Kathy) Hirschfeld, Findlay, Craig (Sheila) Hirschfeld, New Bremen, and Christine Hirschfeld Kelser, Dublin; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Deceased are an infant sister and a sister, Viola Headapohl.
He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, New Bremen, and had served on the church consistory. He was a 1936 graduate of New Bremen High School. He had served on the New Bremen school board, the village council, the JTDM Hospital Foundation board and on the Arrowhead Golf Club board. He was a member of American Legion Post in New Bremen.
He served with the Fifth Air Force in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He had owned and operated Crown Cleaners in New Bremen. He had worked at the Arcade Department Store, New Bremen, and also operated H and F Floor Covering in New Bremen. He retired in 1978 from Crown Equipment Corporation as an executive vice president.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Burial will follow in German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. today at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, New Bremen, and 9:30 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church memorial fund or to the New Bremen Foundation.
