New Knoxville's Haley Horstman was selected as the girls basketball Player of the Year by the coaches of the Midwest Athletic Conference this week.
Underclassmen took the top honors as the Midwest Athletic Conference officially released its All-Conference team.
New Knoxvillle sophomore Haley Horstman and Fort Recovery junior Wade Gelhaus earned the Player of the Year honors in a vote of the conference coaches.
Horstman has helped the Rangers to the Division IV Regional tournament and a 21-3 record this season. Horstman averages 11.1 points and 2.8 steals per game while shooting 55.3 percent from the field.
Gelhaus is the first underclassman to take the boys' top honor since former teammate Greg Kahlig won the first of his back-to-back honors in 2009. The 6-5 Gelhaus led the MAC in scoring at over 19.2 points per game and ranked on the leaderboard in rebounds (9.5 rpg.) and field goal percentage (50.7 percent).
Marion Local girls' coach Treva Fortkamp and Fort Recovery boys' coach Brian Patch earned the Coach of the Year honors after guiding their teams to outright conference titles.
