Honoring those who served

Col. Joseph Schmidt, a native of Rockford, salutes the American flag as the Parkway High School marching band plays in the background during Memorial Day services in Rockford on Monday morning. Schmidt, who is retiring from the Air Force after 30 years, asked attendees to earn the freedom forged and preserved by fallen service men and women by living meaningful lives.
