Accident victim's brother remains in critical condition

A Fort Recovery man died Monday afternoon of injuries sustained in a Sunday morning traffic accident. His brother, who also was involved in the accident, remains in critical condition.
Cody Wehnes, 18, 2620 Sawmill Road, was pronounced dead about 2:15 p.m. Monday in the intensive care unit at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. It was the 15th traffic fatality of the year in Mercer County.
Nineteen-year-old Joseph Steinbrunner, also of the Sawmill Road address, is undergoing treatment in Miami Valley's intensive care unit.
Both men were transferred by CareFlight emergency helicopters from Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater following the single-vehicle crash at 3:57 a.m. Sunday along Philothea Road near Coldwater. The accident remains under investigation by the Mercer County Sheriff's Department; it has not yet been determined who was driving the vehicle.
The 2001 Chevy Impala, registered to Steinbrunner, was westbound on Philothea Road when it reportedly traveled off the south side of the pavement and through a side ditch into a cornfield. The car rolled, ejecting both men before coming to rest in an upright position in a nearby driveway. Neither man was using a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to sheriff's office reports.
The heavily damaged car was towed from the scene.
