Preparing for demolition

A worker for Gerard Chimney Co., St. Louis, Mo., climbs the power plant smokestack in St. Marys as demolition of the 68-year-old landmark began this week. Workers plan to remove between five and 10 feet per day of the 225-foot tower at a cost of $116,000. City officials determined the structural integrity of the tower was disintegrating and posed a threat to public safety. Asbestos will be removed from the power plant in the coming months and then bids will be accepted for demolition of the plant and the bottom 30 feet of the tower.
