Iona Berning
Iona J. Berning, 80, of St. Marys, died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday at the St. Marys Living Center.
She was born Oct. 15, 1932, in St. Marys, to Edgar and Lillian Henning.
She married Mathias Berning on June 25, 1955, and he died Oct. 11, 1974.
She is survived by her two daughters, Carla (Daniel) Kohnen of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Debra (Thomas) McKivison of Lima; five grandchildren, Mathias, Benjamin, Margaret, John and Jamie; five great-grandchildren, Holden, Sydney, Kaylee, Emerson and Allie; two brothers, Edgar Henning of New Bremen and Paul Henning of St. Marys; and a sister, Ruth Griesdorn of St. Marys.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Robert Henning, John Ward, Lester Ward, Helen Chiromente and Ida Deitsch.
She was a graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School. She retired from Valley Nursing Home in St. Marys, where she had worked as a housekeeper.
She was very family-oriented and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed watching old movies and reading and she was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in St. Marys.
Funeral rites are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 West High Street, St. Marys, the Rev. Dr. Ed Bray officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Calling is 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.
