Werner Stelzer
Werner W. Stelzer, 93, Celina, passed away Sept. 23, 2013, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center in Minster.
He was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Carthagena, to John and Bernadina Wuebker Stelzer.
Werner and Rosella R. "Sally" Bergman were married April 27, 1946, and she preceded him in death Dec. 27, 1990.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy (Russ) Harting, Minster; a grandson, Todd (Carolyn) Harting, St. Marys; two great-grandsons, Brian and Michael Harting; a brother, John (Ruth) Stelzer, St. Henry; and two sisters, Nothburga "Butch" Geise, Coldwater, and Imelda "Sis" Puthoff, Chickasaw.
Preceding him in death were three children, Virginia Lee, Laura Marie and Randolph Joseph Stelzer; a granddaughter, Amy Ann Harting; and nine brothers and sisters, Francis Stelzer, Elenora Schockman, Henry Stelzer, Lidwina Bergman, Florian Stelzer, Willibald "Bill" Stelzer, Delphina Quinter, Norbert Stelzer and Corinne Stelzer.
Werner attended school in Carthagena and served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 during World War II as an MP in West Africa. He was employed for 42 years as a cabinet builder at Mersman Tables in Celina.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #1800, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 5713 in Celina. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He was very active with the Mercer County Council on Aging Senior Citizens Center, and for nearly 20 years he had organized card playing events at the center.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church in Celina, Fr. Kenneth Alt presiding. Burial with graveside military rites will follow at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery in Celina.
Calling is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and 9-10:15 a.m. Thursday at W.H. Dick and Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home, Celina.
Memorial donations may be given to the Mercer County Council on Aging/Senior Citizens Center, Celina.
