Dorothy Cook
Dorothy Lee Cook, 84, Celina, passed away March 11, 2014, at Miller House in Celina.
She was born Nov. 22, 1929, in Celina, to Edward George and Frances Hedwig "Hettie" Heckler Gelhaus. On Nov. 14, 1953, she married Carl E. Cook, who preceded her in death Sept. 5, 2012.
Surviving are five children, Beth (Steve) Smalley, Celina, Sally (Jeff) Beam, Tipp City and Bill (Jill) Cook, Carey (Rob) Luebke, and Katey (Steve) Eichler, all of Celina; 19 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and one on the way; a brother, Paul (Monica) Gelhaus, Dayton; brothers-in-law, Bob (Cinda) Cook, Celina, Don (Sharon) Cook, Columbus, Clark (Mary Alice) Cook, Sidney, and Ben (Kathy) Cook, Napoleon; and sisters-in-law, Katey Crider, Bowling Green, Sally (John) Wannemacher, Troy, Becky (Dan) Dumbauld, Zionsville, Ind., Liz Frushour, Bowling Green, and Betty Cook of Celina.
Preceding her in death were a son, James F. Cook, who died Oct. 16, 1980; a sister, Jean Gelhaus, who died in childhood; two sisters and their husbands, Rita and Doug Nimon and Mary Helen and Ed Weisenberger; a brother, Fr. Louis Gelhaus; a brother and his wife, Bob and Rita Gelhaus; brothers-in-law, Grant and Mike Cook, Bob Crider and Jack Conley; and a sister-in-law, Rosalyn Cook.
She was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School, Celina, and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and its Altar Rosary Society. For many years she sang in the Adult Choir at the church and was a Companion of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood. A homemaker, she had been a cafeteria worker at East Elementary School and a secretary at Mersman Tables and also had worked at Case Leasing, where she kept log books for truck drivers.
She enjoyed tole painting wooden items that had been handcrafted by her husband. Noted among family and friends as a bread baker, hundreds of her "fresh from the oven" loaves were delivered as welcome gifts over the years.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, Celina, the Rev. Ken Alt officiating. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery, Celina.
Calling is 3-8 p.m. Friday and 9-9:45 a.m. Saturday at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home, Celina.
Memorial contributions may be made to State of the Heart Hospice or St. Peter Neurological Center in Burkettsville.
