Richard Howell
Richard F. "Dick" Howell, 88, West Milton, formerly of St. Marys, died at 4:05 p.m. July 5, 2014, at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Dayton.
He was born Sept. 7, 1925, in St. Marys, to Vernon and Opal Vanover Howell. On April 29, 1950, he married Avenell "Maxine" Cross, who survives at a Tipp City nursing home.
Also surviving are two children, Randy (Rose) Howell, Chicago, and Wanda (Steve) McAllister, Tipp City; a son-in-law, Ron "Gig" Grieshop, Coldwater; a daughter-in-law, Susan Howell, Greenville; three siblings, Ruby (Roger) Settlage, New Knoxville, and Barbara Minnich and Angela (Larry) Thornsbury, all of St. Marys; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a daughter, Robyn Howell Grieshop; a son, Richard Max Howell; two sisters, Norma Sullivan and Wilma Wolfe; and a grandson, Ryan Howell.
He had a long career as an over-the-road truck driver for Beatrice Foods, New Bremen. A 1944 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School, he had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9289, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 323, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 767 and Wayne Street United Methodist Church, all of St. Marys. He had been a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed his career very much. He and his wife later traveled to many places around the globe and will be remembered for his great sense of humor.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home West Chapel, St. Marys, the Rev. Dr. David Williams officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
Calling is after 11 a.m. Saturday until the time of services at the funeral home.
