CELINA - It was about as perfect a night as Celina coach Calvin Freeman could have asked for.
The Bulldogs scored three goals in the first half against rival St. Marys and finished with a 4-0 shutout in the Division II girls soccer sectional final Thursday night at the soccer stadium.
Celina (10-3-4) advances to the Elida district semifinals next Tuesday at the Elida Athletic Complex against Wapakoneta at 5 p.m.
"A great win," Freeman said. "It's a major rivalry. To come out with a win and to keep them shut out of the goal is just awesome. Now we move to the district. That's a positive."
Bekah Carr started the scoring 4 1/2 minutes into the match with a free kick from 25 yards out that was just out of reach of Roughrider keeper Bailey Fenwick-Miller.
Fourteen minutes later, Carr set up her fellow first team All-WBL honoree Caelyn Reineke for the second goal of the night. It took another 7 1/2 minutes to make it 3-0 as Elyssa Sheriff scored off a Reineke pass.
"They're a lot faster than us. That's what it comes down to," St. Marys coach Seth Hertenstein said. "We did the things we needed to do. We marked up and they went past it. They have an All-State track runner (Carr). She's hard to keep up with."
The Bulldogs could not put the match into cruise control, however, as the Roughriders continued to put the pressure on. Celina keeper Callie Vogel made four saves on the night as St. Marys played aggressively right to the final whistle.
"We got them down 3-0 at halftime and they came out like they were up 3-0," Freeman said of St. Marys. "That's a credit to the girls and to the coach."
"The one thing we did right, it was picking ourselves up," Hertenstein said. "Getting in that deep hole was definitely hard to get out of when you struggle to score against a team that has a top-notch defense. They've only allowed 4-5 goals all year."
Alyssa Cisco capped off the Celina scoring with 8:44 left in the match off the assist from Carr.
Freeman tipped his cap to the Roughriders on a good effort.
"They played the entire 80 minutes. There's no give-up in St. Marys," Freeman said. "There's a lot of talent over there. We were just fortunate to keep them out of the net."
