Donald Brotherwood
Donald L. Brotherwood, 85, St. Marys, died at 4:23 p.m. Dec. 3, 2014, at his residence.
He was born May 26, 1929, in Van Wert, to John and Ada Brotherwood. On April 4, 1953, in Portland, Ind., he married Mary Ann Brotherwood, who died May 12, 2014.
Surviving are six children, Donald (Nancy) Brotherwood, St. Marys, Dean (Ann) Brotherwood, St. Marys, Elizabeth (Mark) Hemmert, Botkins, Amy (Glenn) Norman, St. Marys, Steven (Teresa) Brotherwood, St. Marys, and Susan (Donald) Henline, St. Marys; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Grace Ball, St. Marys.
Deceased are a brother, Albert "Smokey" Brotherwood, and two sisters, Caroline Lunz and Sharon Sloan.
He retired in 1991 from Avco/White New Idea Farm Equipment Corp., Coldwater, where he had been employed for 28 years.
He entered the Army on Jan. 4, 1951, and was a member of the 24th Infantry Division, 19th Infantry Regiment, Company L, where he served in the Korean War. He was separated from military service on Oct. 3, 1952, and served four years in active reserve status before being discharged with the rank of sergeant.
During his time of service he was awarded the Combat Infantrymen Badge, Army Good Conduct Medal with the Japan clasp, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, United Nations Medal for Korea, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Korean Defense Service Medal.
In June 2014, he received the Ambassador of Peace Medal at a ceremony held at the Korean Veteran War Memorial in Dayton. He was proud to have served his country.
His favorite pastimes were taking care of his late wife's dog, Sissy, who provided him companionship after his wife's passing. He also enjoyed woodworking, auto racing and watching Cincinnati Reds baseball games.
He enjoyed his visits with his Army buddies. He co-owned a small engine repair business and continued helping repair small engines throughout his life. In his younger years he enjoyed racing go-carts as a hobby with his dad and brother.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family.
Rites are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, High Street chapel, St. Marys. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, St. Marys.
Calling is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
