Forrest Jewell
Forrest G. "Frosty" Jewell, 97, Green Bay, Wis., and formerly of Fort Wayne, Ind., died Jan. 18, 2015.
He was born May 11, 1917, in Mercer County, to Ray and Edith Jewell. On June 6, 1943, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Rockford, he married Glendola Groth, who is deceased.
Surviving are three daughters, Suzanne (Dennis) Schatt, Green Bay, Luanne (James) Krantz, Rockport, Texas, and Linda (Max) Proffitt, Traverse City, Mich.; five grandchildren, Robert (Jen Theney) Schatt, Bloomington, Minn., Steve (Amy) Schatt, Afton, Minn., Kristin (Chris) Daniels, Plymouth, Minn., Brian (Shay) Vollmar, Lexington, Ky., and Eric (Niki) Vollmar, Mount Pleasant, Mich.; 11 great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Emma, Sophia, Julia and Alexander Schatt, Joshua and Isaac Daniels, Noah Hill, Jacob and Madilyn Vollmar and Zak Russell; three nephews, Dana (Rhonda) Runnion, Duane (Sheila) Hines and Donald (Karen) Hines; and two nieces, Charlene Hawk and Miriam (Bob) Fetters.
Also deceased are two sisters, and their husbands, Arlene (Bob) Runnion and Mary Ellen (Carl) Hines; a sister-in-law and her husband, Thelma (Bill) Hawk; a nephew and his wife, Roger (Connie) Hawk; and a niece, Theresa Runnion Taylor.
Following graduation from Rockford High School, Rockford, he worked on road construction with his father until he was drafted into the Army during World War II, serving as a member of the 14th Armored Division in Germany. He and his wife moved to Fort Wayne soon after the war ended where he began working at May Sand and Gravel Company. There, he blasted the first stone from the ground for what eventually became May Stone Company. He retired from the company, now Hanson.
He enjoyed bowling and golf and serving wherever he could help at his church. Even more, he enjoyed teasing his girls and others: tickling, turtles in his lunch box when he got home from work and blasting the air horn on his truck when you least expected it, among other things. He was famous in the family for driving around every detour sign he came to, just to see what they were doing to the road ahead.
Services are 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, 729 W. Washington Blvd., Fort Wayne, the Rev. Dennis Schatt officiating.
Calling is 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Klaehn, Fahl and Melton Funeral Home, 6424 Winchester Road, Fort Wayne, and 9-10 a.m. Monday at the church.
Memorials may be sent to St. John Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, or to Woodside Senior Communities, 1040 Pilgrim Way, Green Bay, WI 54304.
