Helena Schaadt
Helena Maxine Schaadt "Maxine," 92, Rockford, died at 8:45 a.m. March 7, 2015, at The Laurels of Shane Hill, where she had been a patient.
She was born July 6, 1922, in Missouri. On Nov. 11, 1971, she married Gerald "Jerry" Schaadt, who survives in Rockford.
Also surviving are a stepson, Michael Schaadt, West Palm Beach, Fla., and a stepdaughter, Diana Davrainville of Oregon; two stepgrandchildren; a sister-in-law, Helen Schaadt, Van Wert; two nephews, David Schaadt, Van Wert, and Paul (Rachel) Schaadt, Fort Wayne, Ind.; two nieces, Joyce (Chris) Clark and Karen Banks, all of Van Wert; and two great-nieces and a great-nephew, all of Van Wert.
Deceased are two brothers-in-law, Karl Schaadt and Ralph Schaadt, and a sister-in-law, Florine Schaadt.
She and her husband moved to Rockford after buying the Tastee Twirl in 1975. For the next 21 years, they continued the tradition of serving the best soft-serve ice cream, sandwiches and shakes to the people in Rockford and the surrounding areas. Later, she and Jerry opened Maxine's, a soup and sandwich shop in Rockford. Maxine also was the first person in the Rockford area to open a tanning salon in town.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ketcham-Ripley Funeral Home, Rockford, Pastor Chip Steffy officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Ohio City.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
