Howard Carpenter
Howard E. Carpenter, Jr., 83, New Bremen, died 7:13 P.M. Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, Saint Marys.
He was born November 20, 1931, in Saint Marys, the son of Howard E. and Charlotte (Copsey) Carpenter, Sr. Howard was raised by his mother and step-father, Charlotte (Copsey) Adams and Harold Adams. He married Esther Ricker on November 17, 1956, in Jay County, Indiana, and she survives at the residence.
He is also survived by his children: Thomas (Melissa) Carpenter of Saint Marys; Terry (Dixie) Carpenter of Dallesport, Washington; Theodore (Jane Kill) Carpenter of Celina; Patricia (Michael) Gavi of Jamestown, California; Timothy Carpenter of Columbus, Ohio; Julie (Dennis) Parent of Saint Marys; Christine (David) Ring of Saint Marys; John (Jessica) Carpenter of Richland Hills, Georgia; Angela (Brett) Yahl of New Bremen; Mark Carpenter of New Bremen. He is survived by 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters: Sandra Henkle of Saint Marys; Victoria (Jeff) Hardeman of Saint Marys; Sally (Albert) Harruff of Spencerville; by one brother, Jack (Judy) Copsey of Saint Marys. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Millie (Richard) DeVore of Antioch, Tennessee, and Dorothy (Don) Springer of Celina; and a brother-in-law, Norbert (Rosemary) Ricker of Saint Marys.
He was preceded in death by his father, Howard E. Carpenter, Sr; his mother, Charlotte (Copsey) Carpenter-Adams; his step-father, Harold Adams; two grandchildren: Suzanne Carpenter and Wyatt Yahl; a great-grandson, Andrew Carpenter.
Howard graduated from Saint Marys Memorial High School in 1949, and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served 1.5 years in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Saint Marys after 42 years of service.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Saint Marys; American Legion Post 323 and VFW Post 9289, both in Saint Marys. He was a Boy Scout Leader for 12 years and enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially cycling, canoeing and hiking.
He made three memorable Boy Scout trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Golf was a retirement hobby, along with spending time with his family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Saint Marys, Father Barry Stechschulte, celebrant. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Saint Marys.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, Saint Marys, Ohio, where memorial gifts may be given the Holy Rosary Church Building Fund.
