Gelhaus, Saginaw Valley on track in the GLIAC
College Notes
By Colin Foster
Wade Gelhaus and the 15th-ranked Saginaw Valley State Cardinals clinched the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division championship on Saturday with an 80-72 victory over Michigan Tech.
Gelhaus, a Fort Recovery product, tallied seven points, six rebounds, one assist and a steal in the win. The Cardinals will look to do some more damage in the post season. They have also secured a home game in the GLIAC tournament.
Coach Charlie Ernst (Minster grad), Elijah Kahlig (Fort Recovery) and the Findlay Oilers are far from out of the race in the South Division. The Oilers (17-7, 14 GLIAC) are a game behind Ashland (21-4, 15-4 GLIAC) in the division. After winning 12 straight games, the Oilers have lost their past two. Ashland edged Findlay 67-64 on Feb. 11 at Kates Gymnasium. Then the Oilers lost in overtime 81-67 at Lake Erie on Saturday.
Findlay, Saginaw Valley State and Ashland are the only teams in the conference thus far to clinch a berth in the GLIAC tourney.
Freshman Carson Manger (New Bremen) and the Lake Superior State Lakers (17-8, 12-7 GLIAC) scored an upset over nationally-ranked Ferris State on Saturday. Manger scored 13 points, snatched four rebounds and added a dime in the win. It was the second double-digit scoring outing in the past three games for Manger, who is averaging 8.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
The Findlay women's basketball team has gone 3-2 over its last five, bringing its overall record to 15-10 and staying above .500 in the GLIAC at 10-9, which ranks fourth in the South Division.
Haley Horstman (New Knoxville) and Margaret Wuebker (Marion Local) scored 13 and 10 points respectively on Saturday to lead the Oilers to a 61-56 win over Lake Erie on the road.
It's not a new story for Horstman and Wuebker - they've led Findlay all season.
Wuebker, who recently went over 1,000 points for her career, has scored double figures in 10 of 11 games and averages 12 points plus six rebounds. Horstman is averaging 12.5 points on 50 percent shooting. She adds four rebounds and 2.4 assists.
Allie Thobe (Marion Local) contributed seven points in the Oilers' Feb. 6 win over Tiffin. She followed that with four points in a loss to Ashland before going scoreless in seven minutes of action against Lake Erie. On the season, Thobe is averaging three points and two rebounds in close to 10 minutes per game.
Thobe's high school classmate, Ryan Bruns, has worked himself into the starting lineup for the Ohio Northern men's team. (That's bound to happen when you average double digits as a freshman).
The Polar Bears have won three of four games. Bruns scored 16 points in a 103-94 win over Wilmington on Feb. 3. He scored seven and eight points in ONU's most recent wins over Heidelberg and Muskingum. Bruns is averaging 10.2 points and 4.2 rebounds. ONU is 11-12 overall and 8-8 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
Another former Marion Local Flyer, Megan Kuether, led the Ohio Wesleyan women to a 76-73 win over Allegheny on Saturday. Kuether had 23 points, six rebounds and two assists as the Battling Bishops picked up win No. 6 on the season.
