Steven Bruns
Steven A. Bruns passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on February 20th, 2016.
He was survived by his wife, Anni Bruns, of Auburn, IN, and his two daughters Melissa (Nick) Johnson, and their daughter Faith, also of Auburn, and Megan Bruns of Summerville, SC. As well as his sister, Jane (Roy) Kremer, and their son Rob, of Coldwater, OH, and his brother, Bill Bruns, of New Bremen, OH. His parents Alvin and Alice Bruns, of New Bremen, OH, and his in-laws Stan and Sandra (Huston) Allen, of Huntington, IN.
He was preceded in death by his father in-law Richard Huston, of Huntington, IN, and his nephew, Ryan Kremer, of New Bremen, OH.
He was born in Greenville, OH and raised in New Bremen, OH. He was a part of the inaugural football team for New Bremen High School. He attended Tri-State University and was a part of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. While at Tri-State he also met his wife, Anni, and they married in September of 1981 at First United Church of Christ in Huntington.
He eventually transferred to IPFW where he obtained an Associated Degree in Construction Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering Technology. He was also a licensed land surveyor and an active member of the Indiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors and Auburn Plan Commission for many years.
Steve worked for DeKalb County Surveyor's office before transferring to the City of Auburn engineering department. He then moved to Huntington and served as City Engineer there for 7 years. In 1993 he and his family returned to Auburn where he joined the Engineering Department again before taking over as City Engineer in 1994.
Steve was an integral part in the planning and oversight of most infrastructure projects for the City of Auburn for over 20 years. He would often be seen walking projects in the evenings and weekends to ensure the integrity of the project and the safety of the City of Auburn. Of all the municipal projects Steve was involved with, the Rieke Park Trail between North Street and Betz Road was the one he enjoyed the most. A memorial for the maintenance of this trail has been set up in his name through the DeKalb County Community Foundation.
Steve also loved his family unconditionally but was thrilled at the birth of his first grandchild, Faith Marie, this past year.
He coached youth soccer, softball, and basketball when his girls were young and became active with DeKalb High School women's soccer while they attended and for many years after as a scorekeeper at games. He assisted with the design and development of the DeKalb High School soccer field and fieldhouse as well.
Steve enjoyed Notre Dame and Ohio State football and jokes that he never believed he would become such a big fan of European football (soccer) until his girls started to play. He loved all things Notre Dame women's soccer and Manchester University women's soccer, attending games each year as he was able.
In the past several years Steve and Anni have enjoyed exciting weekend adventures in search of the next breakfast hot spot to be featured. He was a member of the Auburn Moose Lodge and Garrett Country Club golf league. Steve also attended First Christian Church in Auburn.
