CELINA - A 39-year-old rural Fort Recovery man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 4-year-old boy, sheriff Jeff Grey said this morning.
Cory W. Eischen, 5098 Rauh Road, is in Mercer County jail awaiting charges stemming from the death of Jaxxen Baker of the same address, Grey said.
Deputies responded to the scene Sunday after having received three calls, Grey said.
A male called at 7:50 p.m. saying he had received a call from his girlfriend, who had just left the home after picking up her child, according to the sheriff.
Eischen's ex-wife Angel Winget called at 7:56 p.m., saying another child at the home was unresponsive and "he murdered" the child, Grey said.
Eischen's father called at 8:02 p.m., saying he was at the home performing CPR on the 4-year-old, Grey said. Winget and Eischen have one child together, Grey added.
Baker was taken to Mercer County Community Hospital by Coldwater EMS with obvious, extensive injuries, Grey said.
Initial statements from Eischen claiming the boy had fallen off a bike and that he had slipped in the shower did not match the obvious injuries, he said.
Baker was pronounced dead at 8:40 p.m. at the hospital, and based on body temperatures, it is believed the child had been dead for some time before arriving at the hospital, according to Grey.
Eischen threatened suicide by holding a knife to his throat at the residence and deputies used a Taser to subdue him, Grey said. He was taken to the Coldwater hospital by Coldwater EMS.
Mercer County Coroner Dr. Timothy Heinrichs ordered an autopsy, which was performed in Montgomery County on Monday. Heinrichs ruled the death a homicide from multiple blunt-force trauma.
Eischen was taken from the hospital to the Mercer County jail, where he is being held on a probation violation from a 2014 felony domestic-violence case. Judge James Scheer set his bond at $500,000, subject to 10 percent cash.
The case is being forwarded to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office for review and the filing of formal charges.
