Alvin Bruns
Alvin H. Bruns age 86 of New Bremen, died on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 8:45 P.M. at the Heritage Center of Minster, where he had been a resident for the last few years.
He was born on September 18, 1931 in Maria Stein, the son of the late Edward J. and Cecila J. (Albers) Bruns. On June 6, 1956, he married Alice M. Berger, in Versailles, and she died on December 4, 2016.
Surviving are their children Jane and Roy Kremer of Coldwater, and Bill Bruns of New Bremen, and daughter-in-law Anni Bruns of Auburn, IN, grandchildren; Melissa and Nick Johnson, Megan Bruns, and Robert Kremer, and great-granddaughter Faith Johnson. Also surviving are his brothers and sister-in-laws; Wilford and Lene Bruns of Tipp City, Leonard Bruns of Maria Stein, Elaine Bruns of Coldwater, Irene Bruns of Chickasaw, and his in-laws; John and Barb Berger, Dick and Bernice Berger, Dick and Doris Ware, Dan and Nancy Streib, and Rob Berger, all of Versailles, along with Linda Berger of Centerville, and Rosalyn Berger of Minster.
Along with his wife and parents, Alvin was preceded in death by a son Steven A. Bruns, a grandson Ryan Kremer, and his brothers and in-laws; Norbert Bruns, Lavern and Marilyn Bruns, Edward Bruns, Jr., Bill Berger, and Paul Berger.
Alvin was a member of the Church of the Holy Redeemer in New Bremen. He graduated from St. John's High School in Maria Stein in 1949. He then went on to serve in the United States Army as an MP during the Korean War.
After returning home from the service, he began working in the construction industry. He eventually started his own company, Alvin Bruns Construction of New Bremen, which he operated for nearly 50 years, before retiring in the late 1990's.
His dedication to his work occupied the majority of his time, but in his spare time, he enjoyed working in his woodshop, watching horse races, and he even raised sheep for a number of years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in New Bremen, with the Rev. Fr. Thomas Dorn, officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Valbert's Cemetery of Versailles.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen, and one hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday at the church.
Memorial contributions in memory of Alvin can be made to the Heritage Center Activity Fund.
