Charles E. Huwer
Charles Huwer, 90, St. Marys, died Friday September 14, 2018 at his residence.
He was born April 1, 1928 in St. Marys, to William and Mary (Bernard) Huwer. On February 6, 1949 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Marys, he married Dorothy "Dot" Huenke, who survives.
Also survived by: son Geoffry (Betsy) Huwer of Boise, ID; daughter Julie (Don) Graves of St. Marys; son Craig (Joni) Huwer of St. Marys; 5 grandsons: Adam (Andrea) Graves, Dr. Todd (Amy) Graves, Josh Huwer, Alex Huwer, U.S. Army SSGT Joe Huwer; 2 great-grandsons: Lucas Graves, Tyler Graves.
Preceded in death by: parents William and Mary Huwer; brother Clarence Huwer; brother Ralph Huwer, brother Harold Huwer.
He was a graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School (Class of 1946) and attended The Ohio State University on a football scholarship. A gifted athlete, he played in the first Ohio high school all-state football game, and was selected as MVP of that game. He played football in college and was then drafted into professional baseball, playing for the Cleveland Indians farm team. He played semi-professional baseball in Iowa and Indiana. He was the proprietor of Huwer Sporting Goods in downtown St. Marys for many years.
His memberships included Eagles Lodge Aerie # 767 and Knights of Columbus Council # 1492. He was also a founding member of St. Marys Little League and a charter member of the St. Marys Baseball Association. Chuck had been honored with induction into both the St. Marys Memorial High School Hall of Fame and the N.E. Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame.
His favorite pastimes included golfing and supporting the St. Marys Roughriders sports programs, Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns. More than anything else, he loved and supported his family in all their activities.
Rites are scheduled to begin 4:00 p.m. Tuesday September 18, 2018 at the Miller - Long & Folk Funeral Home (314 W. High Street Chapel) in St. Marys. Visitation 2 - 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Private family burial will take place at Gethsemane Cemetery in St. Marys.
