CELINA - A hot shooting first half gave St. Henry all the advantage it needed as the Redskins bounced back from their first loss of the season to beat Celina 56-29 in Monday night girls basketball action at the Fieldhouse.
After struggling offensively in the 36-33 loss to Coldwater last Thursday, the Redskins (6-1) got hot as Danielle Lange's 3-pointer broke a 2-2 tie and started a personal 7-0 run against the Bulldogs. Celina had good looks at the basket, but was unable to connect, allowing the Redskins to rebound and get the ball out on transition.
The Redskins shot 50 percent (12 of 24) from the floor in the first half and were 54.8 percent (23 of 42) for the game.
"One of the things we've talked about is executing our offense," said St. Henry coach Wendi Moorman. "When we executed our offense, we were getting really good looks and our shooting percentage goes up. Tonight we did a good job of executing."
"Our biggest Achilles' (heel) was our transition defense," Celina coach Cenzie Rushton said. "We're not communicating and just running to spots. All-in-all, our consistency is down right now. We're still breaking bad habits."
Celina, fresh off its first win of the season on Thursday, tried to stay with St. Henry through the first half, getting as close as 15-8 early in the second quarter on a Maddy Luebke bucket. But Alyssa Buschur hit back-to-back 3s to put the Redskins ahead 21-8.
Not only did the Bulldogs struggle with shooting, making just 5 of 23 first-half attempts, the Redskins put pressure on the outside game as well as doubling-up on Luebke in the paint.
"We start on defense. We want to finish with the rebound," Moorman said. "Our girls have played good defense all year and tonight we played good man-to-man defense."
St. Henry kept padding its lead in the second half, outscoring Celina 33-15 in the final two quarters. Nora Vaughn scored all of her 10 points in the second half.
Lange finished with 12 points to lead St. Henry. Buschur finished with 11.
Luebke led Celina with eight points. Carley Eichler came off the bench to finish with six points.
St. Henry is off until Saturday when it travels to New Madison to face Tri-Village. Celina remains at the Fieldhouse on Thursday to host Parkway.
