Parkway board OKs bid for bleachers
To pay up to $482,275 for project
By Tom Stankard
ROCKFORD - Parkway Local Schools board members on Friday approved a $482,275 bid from Dant Clayton Corp. of Louisville, Kentucky, to replace the home-team football bleachers and possibly the press box.
Also submitting bids were E & D Specialty Stands, North Collins, New York, $300,000, and Farnham Equipment Co., Columbus, $587,500. The project had been estimated to cost $400,000, superintendent Jeanne Osterfeld has said.
Osterfield noted E & D Specialty Stands' bid is substantially lower because the company did not to include everything board members are considering for the project.
After reviewing their options, members authorized Osterfeld to enter into a contract with Dant Clayton for the project. Board president Melissa Burtch said she felt the company's bid had the fewest variables.
The company's bid total included different options for board members to consider, Osterfeld said.
The bid includes the construction of new bleachers and a press box for $382,057 and options of a concrete foundation and path to the concession stand and bathroom, $75,753; demolition and removal of the current bleachers and press box, $14,159; electrical work to the press box, $4,248; and fencing around the bleachers, $6,058.
As alternatives, members discussed using local companies to handle electrical, concrete and demolition work to possibly reduce costs.
District officials next week will create a timeline for the project, Osterfeld said.
Members have discussed replacing the bleachers for the last several years. Maintenance supervisor Mike Jones has said that district personnel for about 10 years have been "applying Band-Aids" to the bleachers built in the early 1970s to keep them safe for use.
District officials also have considered "flipping the stadium" by putting the new home bleachers and press box on the west side of the stadium and new visitors bleachers on the east side and moving the stadium to the track facility. District residents indicated in a survey last year they believe replacing the bleachers was the best option.
