Jean Cramer
Jean K. Cramer, age 76, of Elgin, Illinois, and a former many year resident of the Dundee-Sleepy Hollow-Frontenac areas. She passed away surrounded by her family at St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin on Friday, March 15, 2019.
Jean was born in Celina, Ohio, on August 19, 1942 and was the daughter of the late Darwin & Bernice Bryan. Jean attended Celina High School and went on to graduate from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a degree in Elementary Education.
She was a member of and served as president of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. While at Miami University she was very active in many campus clubs and organizations including the Air Force Angel Flight, a military service club. Jean was a cheerleader for the Miami University Redskins athletic teams and was Homecoming Queen in 1964.
During her senior year at Miami University she met and later married her husband of 54 years, Bill Cramer. Jean began her first grade teaching career in Wyoming, Ohio. She then taught in San Leandro, California, during the two years her husband was in the U.S. Navy, before heading back to Elgin to teach in District U-46 at Lowrie Elementary School.
While living in Elgin, Jean became very active in local charity work with the Elgin Jr. Service Board, serving as its President and was the 1978 Follies chairman. She was proud of the fact that the 1978 Follies had approximately 300 people involved with the production including over 100 children from the Elgin area. She was also a member of the Elgin Fideliters Club, Sherman Hospital Auxiliary, Beau Arts Club, Women in Management, Pan Hel and PTC at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School.
Jean and her family were members of United Church of Christ in West Dundee and actively involved with various church youth choirs and organizations.
Jean joined her husband working with the family business, Cramer's Cleaners, by managing the Barrington, IL location. However, travel became her passion as she and her husband created an adult tour company, World Class Tours, making world-wide travel available for seniors over 50 years of age. She formed a travel club within the company called "Travel with Class" that met at many local movie theaters around the area to help promote the tours.
While her husband was overseeing the travel club, Jean founded and became CEO of Students To..., Inc. The company was formed to take groups of middle and high school students to Chicago to experience the magic of musical theater. Through her company, Students to the Theatre, Jean has worked with hundreds of teachers as well as thousands of students, all over the Chicago suburban area for over 25 years.
Survivors include her husband, William F. "Bill" Cramer. Their children, Andrew, Erin and Jay. Other survivors include her brother, Donald (Binnie) Byran, MD, her sister, Jan (John) Osmun, as well as many nieces and nephews.
