Local teams compete at Cardinal Invitational

New Bremen hosted its annual Cardinal Track and Field Invitational as teams prep for upcoming conference meets.
The battle for the team championships came down to the wire. In the girls' division, Coldwater and Marion Local previewed a possible battle in next week's Mercer County meet with the Flyers edging the Cavaliers 113-101. The host Cardinals were fourth with St. Marys ninth and Parkway 10th.
On the boys' side, Lincolnview won the team title with 118 points with Anna tallying 104 1/2 points for second place. Marion Local was third, St. Marys fourth, Coldwater seventh, Parkway 10th and New Bremen 13.
The Marion girls picked up two victories on the day as Alana Pohlman won the 400-meter dash and then teamed with Grace Knapke, Sam Hoelscher and Brooke Homan to take the 4x400 to seal up the victory.
Coldwater picked up big points from sophomore Haley Alig as she swept the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. Jessica Break added a first-place finish in the pole vault, where she was the only vaulter to go beyond nine feet and won with a top effort of 11-0.
The host Cardinals added a win as Macy Puthoff won the long jump with a best effort of 17-4 3/4, well over a foot ahead of runner-up Katie Alig of Coldwater.
Anna's Hannah Shoemaker had a big day, sweeping the 100 and 300 hurdles and also taking first in the 200 dash. Botkins' Grace Homan swept the throwing events.
On the boys' side, Marion Local's Eric Schlarman tuned up for next week's county meet with a sweep of the throwing events. Flyer teammate Charlie Huelsman added a victory in the 800.
Parkway's Matt Gaerke took first place in the 1,500 run and St. Marys' Ty Schlosser won the pole vault.
Lincolnview's Brad Korte swept the 100 and 200 sprints while Sidney's Josiah Hudgins took first place in both the high jump and long jump. Anna swept the 4x1, 4x2 and 4x4 relays.
The Mercer County Meet starts Tuesday at Cavalier Stadium in Coldwater.

Celina finished third in the girls' division and seventh in the boys' division in Indiana.
The lone wins for the Bulldogs came in a sweep of the pole vault competition with Brooke Robbins winning the girls' title and Kyler Bourne winning the boys' championship.

Bradford, the ninth-ranked team in this week's Division IV state coaches poll, had No. 1 Minster on the ropes in the semifinals of the Katie Horstman Classic Friday at Four Seasons Park.
MINSTER - Last weekend's Jamba Hoops 3-on-3 Tournament was deemed a success by committee members.
Twenty teams competed at Minster High School and an estimated $3,300 was raised for St. Marys Tailgate for Cancer, Jamba Hoops President Brooks Topp said.
