Robert Martens
Robert Martens, age 82, of Celina, passed away Friday, November 29, 2019, at Celina Manor.
Born June 7, 1937, in Celina, he was a son of the late Herman C. & Clara P. ( West ) Martens.
On June 23, 1962, Bob married Diane Grande, and she survives, along with their three sons: Jerry Martens, John & Emily Martens, and Jason Martens, and granddaughters: Mischa Snow and Gemma Martens, all of Celina; and a sister, Carol Crouch, of Tipp City.
Also surviving are Diane's sisters: Colletta Baldridge of Lafayette, LA, and Adrienne Withrow, Marilyn Roby and Rachel & Joe Conrad, all of Wooster, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his brothers: Harold & Marcie Martens and Herman "Junior" & Bonnie Martens, brother-in-law: John Crouch, and his wife's brothers & sisters: Francis & Helen Grande, George & Carol Grande, Philomena & Bill Wright, John & Josephine Grande, Loretta & Leroy Harsh, Jeannine & Bill Wilson, Patricia & Dick Frontz, Clarence Baldridge, Eugene & Barbara Grande, Richard Withrow, and Clark Roby.
Bob was a graduate of Celina High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956, serving at Fort Ord, California. Bob had assisted with his family's business - Martens Greenhouse, in Celina.
He was a project supervisor with the Ohio Department of Transportation. Bob then worked in construction for S.E. Johnson Companies and Dan Jutte Excavating. He later served as an Inspection Consultant for the Mercer County Engineers Office.
Over the years, Bob built many spec homes. Going to casinos, and making an annual trip to Las Vegas with his sons, was something Bob looked forward to. He was interested in WWII history and studying and investing in the stock market.
Bob liked attending auctions, and going to shows at the Niswonger Center in Van Wert. He was a fan of OSU Buckeyes Football.
He enjoyed feeding and watching birds. Bob was known for his gardening skills, particulary growing onions, generously sharing hundreds of them with friends and family.
Most of all, Bob dearly loved his wife and family, his main goal in life was to love and provide for them.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 5, at Immaculate Conception Church in Celina. Fr. Ken Schnipke, C.PP.S. and Pastor Jeff Gramza will preside.
Burial will follow at Swamp College Cemetery, Celina.
Calling Hours are 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 4, at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Celina.
