Donor pays off lunches

Unknown person gives nearly $2,000 to St. Marys district

By Sydney Albert
ST. MARYS - The holidays may be over, but an anonymous donor kept the charitable spirit going recently by donating nearly $2,000 to clear overdue lunch account balances for all students in grades K-8.
St. Marys City Schools Superintendent Bill Ruane on Friday said $1,871.20 was gifted from someone who had previously lived in the area and who still feels a connection to the community.
"It was a person that grew up in St. Marys and spent time here and really appreciated the community and the school system and now is living outside the state and has always felt a connection in what the community and the school system has done for him and his success," Ruane said.
The donation was made in honor of Ruth Craft, who passed away in 2017.
The district frequently gets donations from members of the community and local organizations and churches. Many donate to the school cafeteria fund or to building principals for the purpose of helping students in need pay for lunches or breakfasts.
Yet as far as Ruane could recall, this was one of the only times a single anonymous donor had paid off all student balances for so many grade levels.
